High Intensity Interval Training - Get Your Fix at 2 Chelsea Studios: Brick & Kore

2/12/2016

In preparation for our Presidents' Day Fitness Krawl (which was a blast, you can see the recap here!) we are bringing you a behind-the-scenes look at what makes the 2 high intensity studios on the krawl stand out from the rest!

We are lucky enough here in New York City to have countless offerings at our fingertips when it comes to various styles of exercise. Yogis can rejoice in the fact that there is almost no neighborhood in Manhattan that lacks at least a few different studios, cycling enthusiasts have countless locations to choose from, and dance lovers will find that dance-cardio has emerged as a popular – and extremely fun – way to work out.

And then there are those looking for a super sweaty workout sesh, one that leaves your muscles pulsing and your heart racing, one that keeps you wondering whether or not that was just the best or the worst hour of your life – and coming back the next day to find out.

Meet high-intensity interval training. You’ve likely heard this term in fitness blogs or magazine articles, and read the raving reviews of how effective (and fun, we swear!) it can be. High intensity interval training, more commonly known as HIIT, involves intense bouts of exercise for a short period of time coupled with a quick recovery period before beginning again. The goal is to raise and lower heart rate quickly, for the most fat burn.

We were lucky to speak with Chelsey, of Brick NY and Jessica of KORE New York to find out a bit more about their studios’ HIIT workouts, what to expect, and some details about their exercise rituals to give you some insight into how the fit pros do it.

BRICK, founded in LA in 2010, recently came to New York and is bringing with them their community of people that are not only dedicated to their fitness but to each other. Chelsey shares a bit about the Brick environment.  “BRICK is not your average gym. People don’t wear headphones, or leave discouraged. Everything is done in a group class setting, where a knowledgable coach leads the class through a full-body, heart-pumping workout.”

Their B|X Class is a lively hour of high-intensity interval training. “You’ll run, row, bike, jump, squat, twist, and have a blast!” Chelsey says. “The beauty of BRICK is that you only need one hour to get a kick-butt workout. You simply need to show up, wrk hard, and you’re guaranteed to leave a little fitter an hour later.”

The Meatpacking district’s KORE offers a beat-bumping, sweat-dripping high intensity class as well, but in a different style. Their signature class, the KORE method, calls for exercises to strengthen and fire up your core paired with body-weight strength moves to provide a solid foundation for the rest of your workout – as well as any other workout you do. Students then do circuits utilizing equipment like kettlebells, TRX and resistance bands to bump up the intensity.

Jessica shares advice on those taking the class for the first time. “Don’t be intimidated!” She encourages. “Your body is capable of so much more than your mind gives it credit for.” She goes on to describe a bit about what it’s like at KORE. “We created a specific atmosphere; KORE is designed to motivate you and take the whole ‘psyching yourself out’ aspect out of fitness. Our instructors will take into account varying fitness levels and design routines with modifications that ill change you into the best version of yourself in a safe, fast, and effective way."

The workout is, in fact, effective, and you may expect to need some recovery after. Which Jessica admits, may be the case if you are a beginner to the program. “But the trick is not to truncate that momentum you have created,” Jessica said. “Work through it! Get lots of rest."

Classes like B|X at BRICK and the KORE Method are a must-take for anyone who loves HIIT to get fit. Grab a water bottle, double knot your sneakers and give these two sleek studios a try!
