Be Active Throughout the Trip
Just because you’re on vacation or in a new place does not mean you have to abandon your active lifestyle or workout routine. Get creative, get active and enjoy your new surroundings. Immerse yourself in the culture and find activities unique to the area. Go for a guided walking or bike tour and see the sights. Try out a neighborhood gym or fitness studio and meet some locals while getting a workout in. If you traveled a long way or spent a big night out on the town, taking a jog in the park or doing yoga outdoors are both great ways to re-energize.
Enjoy Healthy Local Cuisine
One of the best parts of traveling abroad is getting to taste the food. In an effort to have a healthy and enjoyable trip, keep in mind that there are risks involved in just sampling any food that you come across. Sanitation standards are not universal and your body may not react well to exotic foods and spices. Try to stick with restaurants and vendors that are recommended by locals and that have healthy and delicious choices to help you feel your best.
Plan Ahead for Medical Needs
Medications and medical devices may not be legal or available in every country, so it is important to plan ahead to make sure that you will have needed medications and devices. Some medical devices may be affected by security scanners, so be sure to do your research. Also research the legal status of any medications you may need to bring, as a doctor’s note may be required for clearance. And most importantly, never pack important medications in your checked bag; carry-on only, just in case your bags don’t make it to your destination.
Purchase Travel Insurance
Travel insurance can help you to pay for a hospital stay or a return flight home if you fall ill or become injured during your trip. If you plan on trying activities that could be considered dangerous, you should purchase additional riders that could help with the costs if you become injured while participating. Purchasing travel insurance could mean the difference between receiving and not receiving needed care.
Traveling can be an especially invigorating experience if you go away with health and being active in mind. Whether you’re on a fitness retreat, business trip, or family vacation, be sure to prioritize health and safety in order to have the best time before, during, and after your trip.
