Troy is a top NYC personal trainer whose main goal is to impact and change lives through an active and healthy lifestyle. He also is a motivational coach who has overcome obstacles himself as you'll read below. He currently coaches at S10 training and through his independent company TB Elite Fitness. Check him out on Instagram @Troy_Brooks. In case you missed it, here are Troy's tips and advice for a healthier and more active life. Troy Brooks wasn't always the fitness machine you see today. He used to have a number of physical ailments ranging from asthma, joint pain, and injuries. In short, he just didn't feel good. In 2012 he made a new year's resolution to feel better, 9 months later and 80lbs down, he became a different person. With this transformation, he was more confident, more social, and he had turned being active into a huge part of his life. Here are Troy's 4 tips on how to feel better, be better, and live better. OTM's - "Opportunities to Move" You're not going to be able to work out every day. There are going to be days where you just can't get to the gym, life happens. So find an Opportunity to Move, a way to keep yourself moving even if you're not at the gym. This could be anything from doing body weight squats and pushups while you're waiting for the subway (ignore the stares, you're doing what you have to do!), to holding a plank during commercial breaks when you're watching TV, to even just getting up a few times a day and walking around your desk, or parking farther from your house, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Find 2 or 3 things you like doing that you can do throughout the day to keep you moving. Enjoy your food Troy has 1 simple rule he sticks to. You can still can eat what you love, just switch it up. For example if you want a burger, don't go to a fast food place to get a greasy, frozen burger. Go to the restaurant with the best burger in town and get an amazing grass fed, organic burger that will fill you up with good quality fuel and leave you satisfied. There are healthy ways to make almost any of your favorite foods! Set up meetings with yourself Make appointments in your calendar with yourself; taking your workout time seriously will be a great return on investment. Make a date with yourself like it's a client meeting, and stick to it. It helps to hold yourself accountable and it reminds you how important YOU are. What time of day should you set these appointments? Scientifically speaking, there are ideal times to work out because of the way your body burns calories after you work out, but Troy is a firm believer that anytime is the best time. Anytime and anywhere you can get it in, do it. What kinds of workouts should you do? Troy specializes in strength, conditioning, plyometrics and more, and the way he trains his clients is based on strength/weight training combined with high intensity interval training: small bursts of movement like battle ropes, sled pushes, and sprints. The best kinds of exercises you can do for your body are functional movements that teach you to move better in everyday life. Find your 'why'
What's going to keep you pushing again and again? Why are you going to keep working out? Is it so you can look or feel better? So you can play with your kids? Get better results at the doctor's? Troy started, and continued to work out to be a better, more energetic person. Take a moment now and think about this... What is your 'why?'
