Studios we love:  BFX in Chelsea & NEW Fidi location

Part spin gym, part group class provider, part personal training facility, BFX is an upscale, yet inviting, boutique studio that I am loving right now.  BFX is a more intimate spinoff of gym giant Town Sports International (New York Sports Club) that is doing so well in its 16th and 6th location that they just opened the doors of the second location in the financial district TODAY (March 23)!

The classes at BFX are thoughtfully created and I appreciate the variety that is offered.  From Box & Bell (a boxing + kettlebell workout) to Fusion classes which mix 27 minutes of spin (“Ride”) with 27 minutes of strength training (“Burn”) or HIIT (“Build”), the classes keep you moving and guessing about what will come next.

The quality of instruction is another reason BFX stands out.  Whether you are new to class or a veteran, the trainers make you feel at home, provide modifications when necessary, and encourage you to push to the next level.  Some of my favorite class/instructor combos include:
  • Fusion Ride & Build with Juan Hidalgo
  • Box & Bell with Jenaro Diaz
  • Stoked 360 with Kira Stokes

If you want to really take your workouts up a notch and see your progress, you can purchase a heart rate monitor at the front desk and then see your heart rate and calories burned on the screens in the studio.  It’s a great real-time motivator for you and others in the class to see how effective the workout really is.

The new location in the Financial District (30 Broad Street) has two studios as well as an area just for personal training.  The spin studio ("Ride" studio) is unique because there are bikes on one side of the room and there is space for floor exercises on the other side - perfect for a Fusion class!  I'm looking forward to taking my first one there tomorrow where half the class is on the bike, half the class is on TRX, kettlebell, etc., and then we switch in the middle!

Whether you visit the Chelsea or Fidi location, you are in for a treat!  They are both clean, beautiful, and - as you have already read - offer excellent instruction.  The Fidi studio is still going through final touches of construction and working out a few kinks (e.g. water fountain shoots water up a foot in the air), but I'm sure these little details will be fixed in the coming days.  Try to pay a visit this launch week while they are offering free classes, or go check out a class soon, you'll be hooked!
