For golfers living in Manhattan – whether new to the sport or lifelong enthusiasts – getting green time can be tough. While I think Central Park should open a course (even mini golf would do), the idea hasn't caught on... just yet. Drive 495 to the rescue: a golf and fitness training facility in the heart of SoHo that lets you practice all of your swings (golf and kettlebell) any day of the week! With three golf simulators (giant screens that mimic famous golf courses and measure the direction, speed, and distance of each ball), you can feel like you’re at Bethpage Black while you’re in the middle of a Manhattan winter! While the studio's foundation is golf, it has a thriving personal training and group class membership. The pristine facility has top-of-the-line equipment for training, whether you are cross training to improve your golf form or if you have no interest in the sport at all but are looking for instruction from some of the city’s most qualified trainers. But back to golf for a minute, since I’m a… strong beginner perhaps? I took a lesson to sharpen my mid-winter skills and was described as having “nice form” but at the same time, my swing is “almost there” – clearly have some work to do. Coach Brandon took me through the basics like grip and swing, and then he had me practice, hitting the ball into a simulated golf course dozens of times. First the full swing, then a half swing. I must say, while it didn't start out so nice (I missed the ball more than I hit it) my swing improved each time, and by the end of the lesson I felt a million times better! I even signed up for their "Get Golf Ready" beginner course so I'll be ready by summer! Drive 495 offers two types of group classes as part of their membership package. Strength & Conditioning is a total body class that uses athletic training movements to work every muscle group. In one 45-minute class, you can expect to use kettlebells, TRX, a VersaClimber, and your own body weight. These classes are capped at eight people to ensure that each class is customized and personalized for the participants and their individual levels. The other class offered at Drive 495 is Clubbell Yoga, a unique mix of vinyasa yoga and added resistance with weights. For the non yogi (like me), this is a great mix of movement, stretching, conditioning, and sweating! I really love this studio, from its golf roots to its modern classes and spotless interior. If you are new to golfing, I highly recommend taking a lesson with one of their pros. If you are an avid golfer, check out the simulators! Regardless, the gym itself is worth a visit, so check it out soon!
