Six in the morning and your alarm is blaring. You remember that you signed up for a spin class before work around the corner. At the time it seemed like an amazing idea, but right now, the last thing you want to do is get your feet out of bed and into a pair of cycling shoes. So you hit snooze, roll over, and mutter, “I’ll go tomorrow morning,” before slipping back into your most recent dream, where you're running on the beach in Costa Rica.... For some people, waking up early is easy. For others, myself included, it’s almost impossible. But when you are young and busy, living and working in the big city, sometimes it's much more convenient to get your workout out of the way first thing in the morning. That way, you can go straight from work to your hot date, happy hour, girls night out, or whatever plans you may have. Here are some tips to get that booty out of bed and to class before the sun rises so you can make the most of your day. Choose a class you like There is nothing worse than waking up for something you don’t want to go to. It makes it that much easier to bail. Instead, choose a workout class you’ve been dying to try and schedule that for the morning. You’ll feel more motivated to get moving, perhaps even excited to leave your bed, if you are looking forward to the work out. For example, I am not a runner. So waking up for an East River jog is about as appealing as wrestling with crocodiles. But I love taking barre classes, so those are the ones I take at the crack of dawn. Get that booty burn on before heading to the office. Pack your bag the night before To save time (which, by the way, means five more minute of sleep…), pack your workout bag the night before with everything you need. Water bottle, towel, deodorant, earphones, post-workout clothes, even your keys if you have a habit of misplacing those bad boys. Then, you can zombie your way from the foot of your bed to the door of your apartment without needed to really power on your brain. Lay out morning outfits and sneakers On the same note, choose your workout outfit and lay it out somewhere visible (and within arms reach!) before going to bed. It will be too hard to choose between all your cute leggings + workout tank combos in the morning, so save yourself the stress. Confession: In desperate situations, I’ve even slept in my workout clothes. Whatever makes it easier for you. Just get up, gear up, and go! Music that gets you moving Nothing pumps me up more for a workout than a bumpin’ playlist. And there is never a time that I need more pumping up than in the early AM. Spend some time crafting an epic playlist with your favorite upbeat tunes and let the beats carry you, mentally and physically, into your workout. Recruit a buddy!
Of all the tips I’ve ever heard, this is the one that has always been the most helpful to me. Misery loves company, right? Grab a friend to take that morning class with you. Or, ask him or her to hold you accountable. Send each other selfies from your studios or send each other motivational morning texts. If there’s time, meet up for a coffee or smoothie afterward to celebrate being productive. You’ve already completed more by 9 am than some do all day, after all!
